Introducing our very first home bred Welsh Corgi Cardigan champion..

*CH CARDIGEMS OPAL ESQUE* - "Minty"

(CH Bethwyn Major League ex CH Wytham Rosamund (ai)

Born 26 May 1999

Age 2 years

Happily retired - age 6 years

Minty holds the distinct honour of being our first home-bred Cardigan champion.
A very successful showdog herself, as the dam of CH CARDIGEMS TOFFEE TRI Minty was the vanguard of many "firsts" in all-breeds achievements for her breed in Western Australia.

Minty was very lightly shown for many BOB; Class and Class in Group wins including BOB & Puppy in Group at both Western Australia's premier all-breeds championship show events, the Perth Royal Show and the Western Classic.

As the sole Cardigan entry from Western Australia, Minty flew to Sydney NSW to attend the Australian National Specialty 2000.
In her first event the Puppy Sweepstakes 9-12 months catering for both Pembrokes and Cardigans, specialty judge Mrs Janet Robinson (USA) awarded Minty 4th out of 15 entries.  Minty was the only Cardigan in that class of exhibits.

Minty then successfully completed her National Specialty outing winning both the Cardigan Puppy Bitch Class and Puppy of Breed.

Most of our current Cardigans can be found via links on the Profiles page, however three of our pivotal Cardigan sires are only featured below.

The first to feature and with genes of pure gold in our opinion,

*CH BETHWYN MAJOR LEAGUE* - "Monty"

(CH Wynrik Drum Major ex CH Bethwyn Blind Faith )

Monty (9years) apologises for his big tongue, it was a very hot day!

Monty was bred by Sue Hadley of the successful Bethwyn Kennels, home of 3 Best in Show winners including the very influential stud force Aust Grand CH Bethwyn Music Man - a litter brother to Monty.

Now retired, to my knowledge Monty is the sire of 5 champions from only 5 litters and is owned and loved by his own special person, Thea.

The complementary sire chosen to work with Monty progeny arrived next...

*CH COPPERLEAF GOLD N FIRE (IMP NZ)* - "Rhys"

(Bluemeadows Bonfire (NZ) ex Copperleaf Mari Gold (NZ)

Born 2 September 2001

Rhys, bred by Joy Hickey of the former Copperleaf Kennels in New Zealand joined us in early 2002.  Copperleaf was one of NZ's most successful and longest established Cardigan Welsh Corgi kennels and our sincere thanks to Joy for sharing Rhys and his golden heritage lines with us.

Rhys has BOB and Class in Group awards won in strong competition of both the specialty and all breeds kind, but his main joy in life is being home or having car rides with his loved ones.

Copperleaf breeding is also the force behind some of the top winning Cardigan stock to be found in both the USA and Europe.
(Please see our links page for details.)

Rhys is now retired but exudes vitality, enthusiasm for life and good humour.  He is never known for a cross word and is always ready for a job or the longest walk.  He absolutely loves puppies!  He was often to be seen elbow-deep in a sea of puppies talking to them noisily and with tail windmilling with joy above their heads.

With the new generation in mind, we then looked around for another outcross sire and 2006 saw the arrival of..

*YARDICAN Q'S Q-GEM TO OZ (IMP FINL)* - "Finn"

(FNL.CH.INT.CH Corben Tri For The Top ex Yardican Will-O-The-Wisp (FNL)

Born 16 December 2003

Wags from Finn!

Finn arrived at just over two years of age and coped with the transition from the northern hemisphere mid-winter weather to mid-summer heat and quarantine, and then a totally different family, lifestyle and language in Western Australia.  He is a happy natured and sweet, cooperative dog with a sensitive and very affectionate personality.  Finn loves to play and especially loves his toys!

Never shown, as we felt he was not a showdog however he has a very useful outcross pedigree absolutely studded with potential.

We were very pleased to receive Finn because one area in which he excels is forequarter construction, including ribbing,  prosternum and correct length and angulation of upper arm - the cross of the corgi breeds and very hard to improve on unless at least one parent is good these areas. Finn is strong and athletic and has the perfect medium size and substance for a male Cardigan along with nice short hocks and the most beautiful coloured dark brown eyes.  He has a nicely set neck, topline, croup and tailset with a thick, bushy tail which on the move is correctly carried in a sweep behind or slightly raised to barely above level with his toplilne.

Stay, stay, oh I give up!  - More wags!

Finny has left us with two quality youngsters and has now retired to a loving home.

From a single litter to CH Cardigems Caught Stealin', he is the sire of Trehilyn Time and Chance (Minor in Group winner in two shows) and a lovely young bitch as yet unshown, Trehilyn Divas Wear Diamonds.
